Prostate Cancer
Prostate cancer is a type of cancer that develops in the prostate gland, a small gland in men that produces seminal fluid. It is one of the most common cancers in men and often grows slowly, especially in the early stages.
Common Symptoms
Early prostate cancer may not cause symptoms. As it progresses, symptoms can include:
- Frequent urination, especially at night
- Difficulty starting or stopping urination
- Weak urine flow
- Pain or burning during urination
- Blood in urine or semen
- Erectile dysfunction
- Pain in the lower back, hips, or pelvis
- Unexplained weight loss or fatigue
Diagnosis
Doctors may use the following tests to diagnose prostate cancer:
- Physical examination and medical history
- Digital rectal examination (DRE)
- PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen) blood test
- MRI scan
- Ultrasound
- Prostate biopsy
- CT scan, PET scan, or bone scan for staging
Treatments
Treatment depends on the stage, grade, and overall health of the patient:
- Active surveillance for slow-growing cancers
- Surgery (prostatectomy)
- Chemotherapy
- Radiation therapy
- Targeted therapy
- Immunotherapy
- Hormone therapy
